Services
Normally for car drivers the earliest date your provisional licence can become valid is your 17th birthday, however you can apply for the licence up to three months before your 17th birthday.
If you apply for your provisional licence before you are 17 you will still have to wait until your 17th birthday before you can start taking driving lesson or sit your theory test.
If you are receiving disability living allowance at the higher rate your provisional licence will come into effect when you are 16, but you can apply for it within three months of your 16th birthday.
The Theory Test is split into 2 parts, the Theory Test and the Hazard Perception Test.
You need to be 17 years old before you are allowed to take this test.
You must pass both of these tests to pass the theory test and be able to take your driving test.
This is a computer based test.
The Theory Test consists of 50 multiple choice questions and you need to answer at least 43 correctly to pass.
You can score 5 points for spotting the hazard at the earliest opportunity sliding down to 0 points for spotting the hazard too late.
You must provide an appropriately insured and licensed car that is suitable for the purpose of the test, displaying L- Plates on the front and rear that don't interfere with the driver's or examiner's view, an interior mirror for the examiner to use, front passenger seat with head restraints and a seatbelt for the examiner.
The vehicle must be legal and roadworthy and have no warning lights showing (i.e. the airbag warning light.)
When you're in the test centre waiting room your examiner will come out to meet you at the time of your test, he/she will ask to see your theory certificate and both parts of your photo card licence (if you have the old style licence see below) and they will ask you to sign a declaration to say that the car is insured for test use and a residence declaration to say you live at that address (this must be signed or your test will be terminated).
